Treating the Diabetes Epidemic 

Seminar Objectives



1. Identify the ADA’s classification of diabetes and diagnostic criteria.

2. Discuss the difference in pathophysiology between type 1 and type 2 diabetes including the role of GLP-1 and amylin.

3. Discuss Insulin Resistance Syndrome (IRS)/Metabolic Syndrome and relation to type 2 diabetes.

4. Discuss the importance of carbohydrate in meal planning for diabetes.

5. Use at least 1 meal planning method to develop a sample menu.

6. Discuss the use of oral medications (mono and in combination) as therapy for diabetes management.

7. Discuss the use of insulin management for type 1 and type 2 diabetes.

8. Discuss the use of the two new products, ByettaTM and Symlin® as adjunct therapy for type 1 or type 2 diabetes management.

9. Evaluate case presentations.

10. Explain the 15/15 Rule for treating hypoglycemia.

11. List at least one advantage to continuous glucose monitoring (CGM).

12. Explain the role of exercise as a non-pharmacological therapy of diabetes.

13. Describe how to use a monofilament to check a patient’s foot sensation to touch.
