Definition of type 1, type 2 and GDM. Risk factors for GDM. Diagnosis of GDM. Treatment goals.
8:45 Maternal and Fetal Risks/ Surveillance – Preexisting Diabetes & GDM
Surveillance tests to prevent fetal and maternal complications, assessment issues. Presentation of Pregestational and GDM case studies.
10:00 Break - Hands on experience with meters and pumps.*
10:30 Treatment: What to Eat?
Percent carbohydrate, protein and fat, frequency of meals and snacks, weight gain goals, caloric needs,other dietary issues. Insulin issues with pregestational. Assessment using case studies.
11:05 Treatment: Pharmacological – Oral Medications
Oral agents - sulfonylureas including Amaryl®; Prandin®; Starlix® (insulin secretagogues), Glucophage®; Glucovance®; Precose®; GlysetTM; ACTOSTM, Avandia®.

1:00 Management Issues - Blood glucose (BG) normal ranges, BG goals, frequency and pre verses post meal testing in GDM. Ketones - when to test.
1:15 Treatment-Exercise Recommendations. Precautions
1:30 Treatment: Medication Types of insulin and insulin delivery systems including pumps. Oral medications potential for use. When to start insulin with GDM. Hypoglycemia treatment. Blood glucose pattern review using case study. Hands on experience with meters and pumps.*

3:00 Intrapartum Issues:
Labor and delivery issues for preexisting diabetes and GDM - BG monitoring and glucose goals during labor, insulin use during labor.
3:30 Post Partum Issues:
Breast-feeding (calories and insulin needs), BG goals, reassessment for diabetes post GDM, contraception for next pregnancy and prevention of type 2 diabetes after GDM.
