Diabetes & Pregnancy Seminar Objectives
- Define gestational and pregestational diabetes.
- Discuss briefly how to help a patient move through grief associated with diagnosis of GDM and fear of harm to fetus.
- State the importance of monitoring blood glucose (including A1C), urine ketones, food intake and activity levels to help normalize blood glucose values.
- Develop meal plans to meet nutritional needs for clients during and after pregnancy.
- Identify when insulin is required in GDM.
- Discuss the use of insulin and insulin pumps in pregestational diabetes.
- Discuss appropriate exercise plans for pregestational diabetes and GDM.
- Discuss the importance of continued good eating and exercise habits after delivery to help prevent the development of type 2 diabetes later in life for those with GDM.
- Generate appropriate referral to CDEs for education.
